Amongst these, a piece in The New York Times, titled \u201cThere\u2019s a Name for the Blah You\u2019re Feeling: It\u2019s Called Languishing,\u201d stood out, not just for its widespread readership and downloads, but for its enduring relevance beyond the 2021 crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Excerpts from Grant&#8217;s article unfold thus:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Initially, the symptoms that pervaded us all eluded recognition. Comrades spoke of concentration woes. Colleagues expressed a lack of zest for the year 2021. A kin stayed up late, rewatching &#8216;National Treasure,&#8217; despite knowing its plot by heart. Instead of leaping out of bed at dawn, I found myself lingering till seven, engrossed in my phone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This wasn&#8217;t burnout \u2013 energy reserves were not depleted. Nor was it depression \u2013 a sense of hopelessness was absent. Rather, we felt a nebulous sense of joylessness and aimlessness. There&#8217;s a term for this: languishing.<\/p>\n<p>A detour: &#8216;Languishing,&#8217; in my perception, conjures images of material destitution. Yet, for the English term &#8216;languishing,&#8217; alternatives like &#8216;withering&#8217; or &#8216;fading&#8217; are suggested. In discussing such a dreary epoch, &#8216;withering&#8217; seems apt, yet &#8216;languishing&#8217; integrates more seamlessly into the text. I couldn&#8217;t locate any instance where &#8216;languishing&#8217; was used in Estonian in the context of mental health. Later, &#8216;vindumine&#8217; also sprang to mind.<\/p>\n<p>In a related TED talk, Grant posits that responses like &#8216;Fantastic!&#8217; or &#8216;Living my best life!&#8217; to the query &#8216;How are you?&#8217; signify toxic positivity. During the pandemic, it would be more fitting to say, &#8216;I am languishing\/withering\/fading.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Toxic positivity is defined as an excessive, ineffective overgeneralization of a happy, optimistic state in all scenarios. Its result is the denial, diminishment, and invalidation of an individual&#8217;s authentic emotional experience.<\/p>\n<p>Like all else, positivity in excess turns venomous, especially when used to mask or mute human experiences. Denying the existence of certain emotions plunges us into a state of denial and suppressed feelings. The truth is, humans are flawed. We feel envy, anger, sorrow, frustration, and greed. Sometimes, life is simply dismal. Pretending to be in a &#8216;constant state of positive vibration&#8217; denies the reality of being human.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing with the article:<\/p>\n<p>Languishing is a sensation of stagnation and emptiness. It&#8217;s as if one is dragging through days, viewing life through a foggy windshield. This emotion might dominate 2021.<\/p>\n<p>As scientists and medics tackle long-Covid&#8217;s physical symptoms, many grapple with the pandemic&#8217;s emotional aftermath.<\/p>\n<p>Pandemic-induced protracted dismay has evolved into chronic languishing.<\/p>\n<p>Psychologically, mental health spans from depression to flourishing well-being. Flourishing is the pinnacle of well-being: a strong sense of purpose, mastery, and significance. Depression represents the nadir of well-being: feelings of desperation, exhaustion, and worthlessness.<\/p>\n<p>Languishing is the overlooked middle child of mental health, a void between depression and flourishing \u2013 an absence of well-being. You exhibit no symptoms of mental illness, yet you&#8217;re not the poster child for mental health either. You&#8217;re not operating at full capacity. Languishing dulls your motivation, disrupts focus, and triples the likelihood of diminished job performance. It&#8217;s arguably more common than conventional depression \u2013 and potentially a greater risk factor for mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>This term was coined by sociologist Corey Keyes, who noticed many who weren&#8217;t depressed weren&#8217;t thriving either. His studies suggest those most likely to experience depression and anxiety disorders in the next decade are currently languishing. Evidence from Italian pandemic healthcare workers indicates those languishing in spring 2020 were thrice as likely to be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder as their counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the peril in languishing is the insidiousness \u2013 pleasure fades, drive diminishes unnoticed. You don&#8217;t realize you&#8217;re sliding into solitude; you&#8217;re indifferent to your indifference. Without recognizing your suffering, you don&#8217;t seek help or even attempt self-aid.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you&#8217;re not languishing, you likely know someone who is. A better understanding can assist in offering support.<\/p>\n<p>Psychologists find that naming emotions is among the best strategies for managing them. Last spring, at the pandemic&#8217;s zenith, the most read post on Harvard Business Review described our collective discomfort as grief. Alongside mourning lost loved ones, we grieved the loss of normalcy. &#8216;Grief&#8217; was a familiar word in this foreign experience. Though we hadn&#8217;t faced a pandemic before, most had experienced loss. This helped us navigate our current challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Much remains to be learned about what causes languishing and how to counter it, but naming it is a first step. It reminds us that we&#8217;re not alone: languishing is a common and shared experience.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of responding to &#8216;How are you?&#8217; with &#8216;Great!&#8217; or &#8216;Fine,&#8217; imagine if we said: &#8216;Honestly, I&#8217;m languishing.&#8217; It would be a refreshing counter to toxic positivity \u2013 this fundamentally American pressure to always be optimistic.<\/p>\n<p>By adding &#8216;languishing&#8217; to your vocabulary, you&#8217;ll start noticing it everywhere. It&#8217;s there when your afternoon walk feels disappointing. It&#8217;s in your children&#8217;s voices when you ask about remote learning. It&#8217;s in every &#8216;Meh&#8217; uttered by a character in &#8216;The Simpsons.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, journalist Daphne K. Lee tweeted about a Chinese phrase meaning &#8216;revenge bedtime procrastination.&#8217; She described it as staying up late to reclaim the freedom lost during the day. I began to wonder if this was not so much a retaliation against control loss, but a silent defiance against languishing. It&#8217;s seeking joy on a dreary day, connection in a lonely week, purpose in an endless pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>What can be done about languishing? The concept of &#8216;flow&#8217; might be an antidote. In the pandemic&#8217;s early days, the best predictor of well-being wasn&#8217;t optimism or mindfulness, but immersion. Those deeply engaged in their projects avoided languishing and maintained pre-pandemic satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>Early morning word puzzles immerse me in flow. Sometimes, late-night Netflix binges do the trick \u2013 immersing you in stories, empathizing with characters, and worrying about their well-being.<\/p>\n<p>While finding new challenges, enjoyable experiences, and meaningful work are all potential remedies for languishing, it&#8217;s hard to immerse yourself when focus eludes you. This challenge predates the pandemic, with people routinely checking emails 74 times a day and switching tasks every 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The pandemic represents a significant loss. To overcome languishing, start with small victories, like solving a puzzle or quickly assembling a seven-letter word. A clear path to flow is a manageable goal: a challenge that stretches your skills and bolsters your resolve. It means dedicating daily time to a meaningful challenge \u2013 an intriguing project, a worthy goal, a substantive conversation. Sometimes, it&#8217;s a small step towards rediscovering the energy and enthusiasm you&#8217;ve missed these past months.<\/p>\n<p>Languishing isn&#8217;t just in our heads \u2013 it&#8217;s in our circumstances. We still inhabit a world that normalizes physical health challenges but stigmatizes mental health ones. As we step into a post-pandemic reality, it&#8217;s time to rethink our understanding of mental health and well-being. &#8216;Not depressed&#8217; doesn&#8217;t mean you&#8217;re without struggles. &#8216;Not burnt out&#8217; doesn&#8217;t imply you can shine.
